As a matter of fact, in just 3 hours the the county broke their their record of marriage licenses given in one day. Normally distributing anywhere from 75-100, over 212 were handed out by 3am... and many couple still waited in line.
For couples above like Jane Abbott Lighty and Pete-e Peterson, who has been together for over 35 years, this day is one they had believed they would never see in their life times. Washington is now one of the 9 US States to recognize Same Sex Marriage, and because of the standard 3 days wait period after obtaining one's Marriage License, tomorrow we will see the first couples begin to wed.
Next up - the Supreme Court has announced they will finally take on the case against DOMA and Proposition 8. While we may not hear news of the ruling until June 2013, no one can deny the obvious excitement to see such history making strides be made in equality and equal rights. For now, enjoy some of the smiling faces from those granted their Marriage Licenses in Washington this week, and hope that come June next summer we see many more photos just like these.
